Why Do I Use Slackware? (written in 2005)
Well, it was my first love. I think i started using it (Slack 2.0) in Nov 1995... and it was love at first sight! ;) Seriously, it seems to me that slackware is the most "pure" distro of Linux out there. Programs in the directory structure are laid out well and files are where they should be. Another good point about Slack: Fast!! Yep, it does not include a fancy graphic based install, so what? It won't make you any bad to use that text interface. What about installing programs? Installing packages in Slackware is really easy for me. If you stick with the Slackware based tgz's its so easy to install. upgradepkg, installpkg and so on and everything you install is stored in /var/log/packages so you know what you've installed and what you haven't, etc. A simple ls -al /var/log/packages | grep will determine and let you know if its installed or not by the package name, etc. There is also swaret which is coming along for those who want those automatic download and install type scripts. Also dropline gnome is an easy way to update anything and everything gnome related, etc. I think installing packages on Slackware is no harder than using RPM's. BTW: i'm using a "home made" shell script to download updates... And i compile the sources and install these new proggies manually, the good old fashioned style :) Old news... but here it is Linus Torvalds vs. Andy Tanenbaum 2005 NewsSince mid 2005 I switched to FreeBSD... It really rocks and even when I still use GNU/Linux @ some machines I saw the light and I will never come back...2007 NewsSomething new about my relation with operating systems? Not much... I still use GNU/Linux (hard to forget) on my notebook and home computer, but my main computer (i.e. at work) runs FreeBSD. As i already said, I saw the light! . Anyway here you have some GNU/Linux links. And now some final thoughts:
